RER Conservation Supervisor Earns Recognition at 10th Asian Wetland Symposium

Dian Andi Syahputra, a Conservation Supervisor in the Ecology Department at the Restorasi Ekosistem Riau (RER), has been a key contributor to wetland conservation efforts since joining in 2018. On November 25, 2024, Dian represented RER at the 10th Asian Wetland Symposium (AWS) held in the Philippines between 25 – 28 November 2024. The prestigious event brought network of wetland stakeholders, which includes national and local governments, NGOs, experts, local communities and the public from 18 Asian countries with this year theme “Wetland-based Solutions”.

Dian was invited to deliver a presentation on “Activity Patterns of the Small Carnivores in Peat Swamp Forest Sites at Kampar Peninsula and Padang Island, Sumatra,” a study under the theme of Wetland Biodiversity. His presentation showcased findings derived from camera trapping research conducted during the period of 2020 – 2023 within RER’s concession areas.

Small-toothed Palm Civet (Arctogalidia trivirgata) was captured on camera trap

This study provides valuable insights into the activity patterns of small carnivores across Kampar Peninsula and Padang Island, highlighting the ecological roles these species play in their ecosystems. The data reveals the ecological roles of small carnivores and notable activity patterns, including consistent behaviors of the Small-toothed Palm Civet, Malay Civet and Leopard Cat across sites.

Dian was awarded Best Presenter at the 10th Asian Wetland Symposium, Philippines

As one of 16 presenters from diverse countries, including the Philippines, Korea, Japan, and Malaysia, Dian’s presentation stood out for its unique focus on mammals. The distinctive topic and comprehensive research methodology captured significant attention and enthusiasm from the audience, reflecting a broader interest in understanding the role of mammals in wetland ecosystems.

On the final day of the symposium, organizers recognized exceptional contributions from presenters across various topics. Dian was honored with the prestigious title of “Best Presenter,” underscoring the relevance, quality, and impact of his research. This recognition reaffirms the critical importance of ongoing conservation initiatives in Sumatra’s peat swamp forests. Dian’s success serves as an inspiration for further research and collaboration to protect and restore Asia’s vital wetland ecosystems
