Today is World Ranger Day!
First held in 2007, World Ranger Day is held annually on July 31, which is the anniversary of the founding of the International Ranger Federation (IRF). The IRF is an organisation which supports the work of rangers around the globe, as the key figures in protecting our beloved parks.
Rangers protect more than 100,000 reserves, parks and protected areas in our world. These protected areas are home to a variety of flora and fauna, including plants and wildlife which are facing the dangerous threat of extinction at this very moment.
World Ranger Day recognises the risk that these rangers take every day when they go to work, as the front line in the fight to protect these natural treasures from threats such as illegal loggers and poachers.
World Ranger Day is also an opportunity to commemorate rangers who have lost their lives or been injured in their line of duty. In the past year, 107 rangers were killed on duty.
Thankfully, since Restorasi Ekosistem Riau (RER) began in 2013, there have been zero of our rangers killed or injured on the job thus far.
Currently, 60 rangers work to protect the 150,000 hectares of forest which make up RER on the Kampar Peninsula and Padang Island in Riau.
Our rangers spend long hours and days in the forest at a time, working hard to protect the 767 plant and animal species found in RER, including the Sumatran Tiger, Bearded Pig, Malayan Sun Bear, Sunda Clouded Leopard, King Cobra and Sunda Pangolin.
